About this deal

The TV version is really there more as a curiosity piece than anything else, and there’s a 19-minute featurette that details the various changes, if you just want to cut to the chase. Like Arrow’s other recent 4K release, 12 Monkeys, RoboCop’s visual improvement in 4K is more of incremental than revolutionary.

As RoboCop’s memories of his former life as Murphy resurface, only his ex-partner, Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen), stands beside him to fight against the vicious thugs responsible for his death, as well as a nefarious top-level OCP executive orchestrating the chaos from above. Gunshots are familiarly dated, but pleasantly maintain that futuristic feel, from Robocop's own burst-firing pistol to ED-209's cannons - and even if there's no thunderous LFE input to really weigh in, this is the way the film has always sounded, it simply cannot compete with modern action flicks. Here it is, and while it isn’t a perfect match in quality, it Is closer here than it ever has been before. Not notch transfer and I like the plastic j card which was easy to remove from the steelbook itself.

The humour, action, pathos and none too subtle nods to a society heavily under the influence of its media, still all work just as well watching it 35 years after its release. Robocop is one of the greatest movies of all time, brutal, prescient, bitingly satirical, violently satisfying, blisteringly lean and utterly unforgettable.A movie classic from the 1980’s that has aged wonderfully and is still just as entertaining as it was upon its release.

RoboCop has always looked a little vague and blurry to these eyes over the years, and Arrow Video’s new 4K transfer addresses many of these issues.Like future Verhoeven mixtures of kitsch and art object, RoboCop is broken up into hard, tactile shards of action, from the stabbing of a thug’s throat to the splatter of another melting thug against a windshield. That makes the reportedly 'exclusive' new book a pretty expensive new addition (EDIT - we were not supplied with a book with the check discs so are unable to confirm the content). The soundbites are punctuated with advertisements that also barely exaggerate the sorts of promotions of the time. But let’s face it, the sequels paled in comparison to the first movie, they lacked the feel that the 1987 movie had, the fresh idea of a cop brought back as a machine was wearing thin and the audiences just loved the first that much that the other seemed like a way of making cash for the studio.
