The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Karczunkowska (144) Family history (139) politics (135) Great Britain (133) Chynów (131) Polish society (128) Poland (120) Polish history (119) aircraft (118) reincarnation?

The poem itself has an engaging structure—the rhythm of the lines and rhymes changing to mimic a steam locomotive warming up and starting to pull a train: slowly at first but with a gathering pace until it is thundering down the track. It’s only minor issues but enough for me to rate this less than 5 (though the original tales still get a 5). My knowledge of Polish was, and is, minimal – but I got the general drift that “what it was about”, was a charming agglomerative nonsense-verse for kids. Viewing these pictures as a child triggered the earliest such anomalous memories that I can remember. The book I remember reading was illustrated by a different person, Jan Marcin Szancer, which I did prefer as they were a little more colourful and the turnip looked huge, but this book I’m reviewing has been illustrated by the original illustrators all the way back in 1937!
