The most peaceful book I listened to, very poignant, happy and extremely important. A lot of great quotes and rules to stay true to yourself and be happy. Very simple read and the voice who read it is extremely brilliant, slow and clear. The book is structured around 10 things we can do to strengthen our core happiness, ideas like cultivating self compassion, finding flow, letting our guard down with others, and realizing the role that our phone is playing in our lives. A chapter is dedicated to each idea, containing deeply personal stories and case studies as well as lots of suggestions on ways to incorporate the principle into our lives. Create a film shortlist: have a list of films in a journal or in an app on your phone. When it comes to film time, don’t go through the streaming menu – just choose one from your personally curated list. Decluttering sounds like a big project, but setting aside just 20 minutes a week can have a big impact. The book is written by Kevin Horsley, the best-selling author of Unlimited Memory, and Louis Fourie, and they have done significant analysis into what is different in the minds of happy people.

Humans are largely considered social beings, and while the research is mixed on how exactly socialization impacts happiness, the consensus is that having social relationships can make us happy. Reserve the hour before bed as quiet time. Take a bath, read, or do something relaxing. Avoid heavy eating and drinking. The point is, when it comes to our happiness, it doesn’t matter which story is true. All that matters is how we feel about it. Feeling constantly short of time damages core happiness and health. But even the busiest among us can change our experience of time, making it feel as if we have more. It’s simply a matter of finding something that we’re passionate about and that fully absorbs us. Even twenty minutes twice a week will make a big difference. So what will you do? How will you change your life by spending just a bit of time doing something you love? He tells us to seek out friction – the more you risk friction by telling your truth, the more aligned you become.”

It’s about being there for ourselves and empowering ourselves to alleviate our own suffering.” Let go of any goals that no longer serve you, even if they sound nice on paper. 25. We’re certainly happier when we learn how to cope with obstacles. When you’re faced with a problem, think about what got you through something similar in the past. Would it work here? What else can you try? If you want to eat with your mood in mind, consider starting with making one food choice for your mood each day. Lean meat, poultry, legumes, and dairy are high in protein. Protein-rich foods release dopamine and norepinephrine, which boost energy and concentration.

Dr Rangan Chatterjee is a leading medical doctor and expert in lifestyle medicine. He has helped thousands of people to boost their health and wellbeing. At this special event, he'll explain how you can let go of "junk happiness" and develop more "core happiness" on a daily basis. At first, I didn’t think this book was as good as the author’s previous ones, which I loved. Perhaps I didn’t find the beginning of the book very good. But I soon began to appreciate it. Louis and Kevin introduce their tutoring about nurturing the happy mind by stating, ‘The principles covered in this book are for the young and the old, and for people of all cultures, religions, and genders. Happiness is an ‘any-time-in-your-life’ prospect, a ‘whoever-you-are’ opportunity, a ‘doesn’t-matter-where-you-come-from’ chance. If you are willing to open your mind to the idea of happiness and to do what it takes, you may pleasantly surprise yourself. The layout of the book is simple. The first three chapters consist of a clear look at how happiness is perceived, what it really is, and what unhappiness looks like. In Chapter 4, we offer you a collection of carefully selected practical prompts to help you apply the theory of happiness to your life. This is the most important part of the book – trust the content. And in Chapter 5, we summarize it all in a final few words of encouragement. Make the most of it. Don’t look for perfection, look for value. Enjoy!’ For those stressors you can’t avoid, remind yourself that everyone has stress — there’s no reason to think it’s all on you. And chances are, you’re stronger than you might think you are.The critical mindset shift here is to see happiness as a practical, manageable affair that you can take control over. You can work on it one day at a time. Gradually identify and then transform these behaviors, thought patterns, and emotional responses that don’t serve your well-being. Set a timer on your phone and take 15 minutes to tidy up a specific area of one room — say, your closet or that out-of-control junk drawer. Put everything in its place and toss or give away any extra clutter that’s not serving you anymore. If you haven’t unplugged in a while, you might be surprised at the difference it makes. Let your mind wander free for a change. Read. Meditate. Take a walk and pay attention to your surroundings. Be sociable. Or be alone. Just be. Horsley and Fourie try to disrupt this statement throughout the whole book by teaching that happiness is something that you create with applying deliberate effort. You need to stop waiting around until it falls upon you and take your fate in your own hands.
